Why can’t we harness lightning energy?

Why can’t we harness lightning energy?

We don’t need to ‘create’ energy – it is already there in lightning. What
we need to find out is how to ‘store’ the available energy.

Lightning is an electric current that may either be between clouds, or
cloud to ground; only the latter is of interest to us. Lightning bolts carry
about 20,000 to 200,000 volts at anywhere between 5,000 to 50,000 amperes
lasting for just a second. We can take averages of say, 50,000 volts at
10,000 amps which translates to 500,000 kilowatt/seconds or roughly 140 KWh.
In comparison, if we can take the power consumption in an average urban home
in India about 200 KWh per month, we can say that there is enough energy in
one lightning bolt to power an average home for about twenty days.

Apparently, lightning strikes the surface of the Earth all the time, and
there are about a hundred lightning strikes every second. (estimates vary)
But that is on a ‘world’ scale whereas thunderstorms occur in a given
location only for about twenty days annually. If the available energy is
‘distributed’ all over the world, there is not much we can do with it.

Lightning Facts and Information

Even locally, the problem is we do not know when or where it will strike
next. Collecting lightning charges and converting it to useful energy may be
an almost impossible task. Assuming someone designs such a complex system of
storage and distribution, it may not be cost effective.

I wonder if you have watched the movie ‘Back to the Future’ (1985) in which
Doc Brown uses lightning to power the sports car time machine. But he knew
exactly where the next light bolt would strike.
